The 4FRNT Index

What a normal local business
actually looks like online.

Everyone quotes industry averages. Almost nobody says where the number came from. These are medians from the businesses we have actually scanned, and every figure carries the count it was built from.

Held back for thin data

We have scans for salons (3), which is under our floor of 8. A median built on a handful of businesses is decoration, so we are not printing one. They appear here when they clear the floor.

How this is built

  • Every figure is a median. An average lets one 4,000-review outlier invent a typical business that does not exist.
  • Nothing is published below 8 scans in a category, and what we withhold is named above rather than quietly dropped.
  • Percentages are computed only over businesses where we could actually determine the answer, so a detection miss cannot drag a share downward.
  • It grows every time someone runs the free scan. That is the whole point.
  • What this is not: a random sample. These are businesses somebody chose to look up, so the set leans toward whoever we and our visitors were curious about. Treat it as a real read of a real group, not a census of every local business in the country.
